Antwerp launches gender equality action plan for youth workers
The City of Antwerp has introduced a new action plan to support youth workers in addressing growing challenges regarding gender equality. The initiative provides free training, workshops, and guidance to help professionals and volunteers navigate tensions related to traditional gender roles and social media influence.
City officials noted that young people are increasingly exposed to diverse and sometimes extreme ideas about masculinity, femininity, and sexuality through online communities, often referred to as the 'manosphere' and 'femosphere.' These digital spaces can reinforce stereotypes and create friction between young men and women. The program aims to equip youth workers with the tools to facilitate difficult conversations and ensure a safe environment for all youth.
Antwerp is collaborating with several specialized organizations, including Punt vzw, Pimento, the Hannah Arendt Institute, Sensoa, Tumult, Bazzz, de Aanstokerij, and ZIJkant, to deliver this support to local associations such as scouts and chiro groups.
