Antwerp World Diamond Center faces scrutiny over ring gift and tariff exemption

The Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) is facing scrutiny following the presentation of a lavish, jewel-encrusted ring intended for Donald Trump. In late June, AWDC President Isidore Mörsel presented the ring to the American Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White. The 18-karat gold ring, designed by David Gotlib, features the presidential seal, emeralds, rubies, and 321 diamonds, with a conservative valuation between $25,000 and $35,000.

Questions regarding potential political favors arose after European diamonds were granted an exemption from the latest wave of Trump tariffs on July 24. Senate Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have raised concerns about the timing of the gift and the subsequent trade policy reversal. Warren characterized the incident as “cartoonish corruption.”

The AWDC has denied any link between the gift and the tariff decision, stating that discussions regarding U.S. import tariffs were “entirely separate” from the presentation of the ring.
