ANUIES regional councils address Mexican university funding and security
Representatives from various Mexican higher education institutions met for the 2026 ordinary sessions of the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) regional councils.
In the Central-South Regional Council session hosted by the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), leaders discussed the strategic role of universities in addressing social inequalities and building safer, more inclusive educational communities. Rector Martha Patricia Zarza Delgado emphasized the need for federal support to advance toward free higher education and to ensure the safety of university communities.
Simultaneously, the Northwest Regional Council met at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). Discussions there focused on diversifying university financing, strengthening ties with alumni, and coordinating with authorities to address university security. Luis Armando González Placencia, Executive General Secretary of ANUIES, noted that budget sufficiency remains a primary challenge for public institutions, prompting ongoing negotiations with federal authorities and the Chamber of Deputies for increased resources.
