ANUIES seeks 8% budget increase for Mexican public universities

The National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) has announced plans to request an 8 percent budget increase for public universities in 2027. Luis Armando González Placencia, the association's executive general secretary, warned that failing to move beyond inflation-only adjustments could lead to an “accelerated cycle of deterioration” for these institutions.

Currently, state universities face a deficit exceeding 50 billion pesos. This financial strain has resulted in infrastructure deficiencies, outdated laboratories, and limited library resources. The deficit also impacts labor stability; approximately 13,000 teachers lack formal positions and social security, while an additional 50,000 instructors work on an hourly or subject-based basis without the possibility of permanent placement.

Representatives delivered audited financial statements for 35 public universities to the Chamber of Deputies' Oversight Commission. Officials noted that since 2015, higher education institutions have not received budget increases sufficient to fulfill their mandatory functions effectively.
