Anuparna Roy presents ‘Lovers in the Blue Night’ at Venice Film Festival

Anuparna Roy returns to the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti section with her second feature film, ‘Lovers in the Blue Night’. Roy previously won the Best Director award in the same section in 2025 for ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’.

Set in Mumbai, the film follows four migrants from Bengal who have fled villages destroyed by environmental flooding. The narrative explores the lives of characters like Karim, a rat poison vendor, and his wife Ameena, as they navigate the economic and political margins of the metropolis. The story examines the intersection of survival, desire, and identity, depicting the struggle to find meaning beyond mere existence amidst the city's chaotic landscape and environmental decay.
