Anura Kumara Dissanayake marks two years as Sri Lankan President

Anura Kumara Dissanayake is marking two years in office as the President of Sri Lanka. After winning the presidential election on September 21, 2024, Dissanayake, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), was sworn in as the nation’s ninth Executive President on September 23, 2024.

Following his presidency, the NPP achieved a significant parliamentary victory in the general election held on November 14, 2024. The party secured 159 of the 225 seats in Parliament, representing 61.56% of the valid votes. This result provided the NPP with a two-thirds majority, the highest vote share recorded by a single party under the country’s proportional representation system.

With this substantial legislative majority, Dissanayake possesses the political capacity to pursue an extensive policy agenda without relying on unstable coalitions. The administration, which includes Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, faces high public expectations to address issues of corruption, waste, and economic fragility that were central to the NPP’s rise to power.
