Anura Kumara Dissanayake presidency marks two years in Sri Lanka

As Sri Lanka marks two years of Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s presidency, academic assessments highlight a complex balance between campaign promises and the realities of governance. Elected on a platform of anti-corruption and systemic reform following a severe economic crisis, Dissanayake’s administration has faced significant structural constraints.

On the economic front, the government has maintained continuity with fiscal consolidation measures required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt restructuring strategy. While some view this as a commendable effort to stabilize the economy, others note that the administration has not departed radically from previous strategies, leaving citizens to manage high taxes and reduced subsidies.

Regarding political and social reforms, critics point to a lack of progress on key pledges. Despite campaigning on the removal of the executive presidency, the administration has not taken steps to revoke those powers. Furthermore, scholars note that there has been little movement toward finding a political solution to ethnic conflicts or prosecuting those responsible for wartime atrocities.
