Anuradhapura High Court hears testimony in pediatrician rape case
The Anuradhapura High Court has commenced evidence hearings in the sexual assault and rape case involving a trained pediatrician at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The victim, who was attacked inside her official residence, appeared in court for the first time to provide over ninety minutes of testimony.
Judge Indika Attanayake ordered the courtroom to be cleared of all irrelevant parties during the sensitive testimony. The prosecution is led by Senior State Counsel Himali Jayanetti, while President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa is representing the interests of the victim. The accused, former army soldier K. B. Maduranga Rathnayake, faces indictments under the amended Penal Code.
The court has scheduled the continuation of evidence for October 19, at which time the victim and her father are expected to appear. Additionally, the court has requested a forensic report regarding the victim’s smartphone and a call analysis from Dialog to assist in the proceedings.
