Anvisa approves Gazyva for the treatment of lupus

Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has recommended the use of Gazyva (obinutuzumab) for the treatment of lupus. The medication, which is also used in some cancer cases, is intended for adult patients suffering from moderate to severe active lupus who are positive for autoantibodies and currently undergoing standard treatment.

Obinutuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody designed to cause the massive and prolonged elimination of B lymphocytes. These cells play a central role in the abnormal physiological processes that drive the development of lupus, a chronic and potentially serious autoimmune condition.

Anvisa noted that the benefits of this new indication include reduced disease activity, fewer exacerbations, and a sustained reduction in the need for corticosteroids. The agency highlighted that many patients currently struggle with recurrent flares or a dependency on corticosteroids, which carry significant long-term side effects.

The Ministry of Health warned that untreated lupus can lead to severe complications in organs such as the kidneys, skin, joints, and central nervous system, potentially resulting in death. Kidney failure is cited as a leading cause of death within the first five years following a lupus diagnosis.
