Anvisa approves second generic semaglutide in Brazil
Brazil's health regulatory agency, Anvisa, has approved the registration of the second generic version of semaglutide in the country. Produced by Germed Farmacêutica, the injectable medication is intended for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity control. This follows the recent approval of the first generic semaglutide by EMS.
The influx of generic options comes after the expiration of the molecule's patent in Brazil in March. These generic versions are expected to increase market competition and could reduce consumer costs by at least 35% compared to reference products like Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy. Germed's product will be available in several injectable presentations, including 1.5 mL and 3 mL cartridges.
In response to growing competition and the availability of new domestic options, Eurofarma has announced price reductions of up to 39% for its Poviztra (semaglutide) presentations through its EuroCuida patient support program. This move aims to facilitate treatment adherence for patients using maintenance doses.
