Anvisa authorizes human trials for Brazilian malaria vaccine

Brazil's health regulatory agency, Anvisa, has authorized human clinical trials for the first vaccine developed in Brazil targeting the Plasmodium vivax parasite. Developed by researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the vaccine aims to combat the parasite responsible for the majority of malaria cases in the country.

The initial Phase I study will involve 48 volunteers aged 18 to 59 who have no prior history of malaria infection. This stage will last 360 days and focus on evaluating the vaccine's safety, potential reactions, and its ability to stimulate an immune response. The Ministry of Health has projected an investment of R$ 12 million to support clinical trials through Phases I, II, and III.

Unlike existing malaria vaccines that target the Plasmodium falciparum parasite common in Africa, this vaccine targets the strain predominant in the Americas and Asia. While the authorization is a significant milestone, the vaccine is not yet available for public use, as it must still undergo further research to establish efficacy and safety.
