Anvisa opens public consultation to update tobacco health warnings

The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has launched two public consultations to update the health warnings and images displayed on cigarette packaging and tobacco-derived product displays. The initiative, led by the General Management of Registration and Inspection of Tobacco-Derived Products (GGTAB), aims to ensure that communication regarding the health risks and harmful substances in tobacco products remains effective through periodic updates.

Members of the public have until November 23 to review the technical documents and submit suggestions regarding the proposals. While commercial advertising of tobacco products has been prohibited in Brazil since 1996, the law allows for the display of products in commercial establishments provided they are accompanied by mandatory health warnings. This regulatory framework aligns with Brazil’s commitment to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
