Anwar Ibrahim addresses AI digital divide and Malaysian economic growth

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has raised concerns regarding the rapid development of artificial intelligence, warning that the global race for AI must not widen the socioeconomic gap between wealthy and developing nations. Speaking at the Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE), Anwar emphasized that digital divides and unfair trade practices pose urgent challenges to global equality.

He advocated for an open global trading system that respects national sovereignty and called for technological innovation to benefit humanity as a whole. Malaysia remains committed to integrating AI across sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and education.

On the domestic front, the implementation of the Madani Economy policy has contributed to macroeconomic growth. According to the 2025 Malaysia Salary and Wage Survey Report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the average monthly wage increased by 4.1 percent to RM3,803, up from RM3,652 the previous year. While efforts to increase minimum wages and attract foreign direct investment continue, economic progress faces headwinds from global geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices.
