Malaysia bans civil servants from using Waze over Israeli security concerns

The Malaysian government has issued an immediate ban on the use of the Waze navigation app for all civil servants. The decision, announced following a National Cyber Security Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, aims to protect sensitive government information and citizens' personal data from potential misuse by the Israeli regime.

Officials noted that Waze Mobile Ltd is incorporated and operates under Israeli law, posing a risk that movement data could be analyzed using artificial intelligence to track routines or compromise national sovereignty. National Security Council director-general Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin warned that civil servants who defy the directive could face disciplinary action.

As an alternative, the Prime Minister has encouraged the use of TuJu, a local navigation application developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) in collaboration with Prosignal Consortium Sdn. Bhd. While TuJu has seen over 700,000 downloads, the app has faced technical challenges, including service disruptions and criticism regarding its navigation accuracy and usability.
