Anwar Ibrahim agrees to one-third parliamentary representation for East Malaysia

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has agreed in principle to restore one-third representation for Sabah and Sarawak in the Dewan Rakyat. This development marks a significant breakthrough in negotiations regarding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the consensus following discussions in Kota Kinabalu with Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor. The proposed formula aims to ensure that if there is an increase in representatives in the peninsula, there must be a proportional increase in Sabah and Sarawak to maintain the one-third ratio.

Abang Johari framed the agreement as a triumph for the unified East Malaysian political bloc, noting that the decision honors the foundational spirit of the federation and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.
