Malaysia to increase Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary representation
During a meeting of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Council in Kota Kinabalu, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the federal government has agreed in principle to increase the parliamentary representation ratio for Sabah and Sarawak. The Prime Minister stated that any increase in seats must ensure the representation ratio for these two states is higher than current levels, and the Election Commission has been notified to begin consultations.
In addition to legislative changes, the federal government will increase Sabah’s interim special grant to RM1.5 billion starting this year. This allocation is expected to be presented to Parliament in October, with disbursements likely occurring in late October or early November.
Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor emphasized the need for a swift resolution regarding the state’s claim to 40 percent of net revenue entitlement under MA63. While the federal government has agreed to the principle of this payment, technical issues remain under negotiation. Hajiji also stressed that maintaining strong relations between the federal government and the Bornean states is essential for the successful implementation of the agreement.
