Malaysia to increase Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary representation
The Malaysian federal government has agreed in principle to increase the parliamentary representation ratio for Sabah and Sarawak, in alignment with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that any increase in seats must ensure the representation ratio for these two Bornean states is higher than current levels, rather than merely maintaining the status quo. The Election Commission has been notified to begin consultations and discussions regarding the implementation mechanism and potential constitutional amendments.
In addition to legislative changes, the federal government has approved an interim increase in special allocations for Sabah to RM1.5 billion starting this year. This amount is expected to be presented to Parliament in October, with disbursements anticipated by late October or early November.
Regarding financial rights, Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor emphasized the ongoing struggle to secure the 40 percent net tax revenue rightfully owed to the state under MA63. While the federal government has agreed to the claim in principle, technical issues remain under negotiation. Discussions regarding interim payments for Sarawak are also expected to be announced around Malaysia Day on September 16.
