Anwar Ibrahim calls for AI protections for Malaysian artists
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for a clear protection framework to ensure that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) do not jeopardize the livelihoods of artists or the sustainability of film production companies in Malaysia.
Speaking at the inauguration of the FINAS building and meeting with representatives from the Gabungan Persatuan Perfileman Malaysia (GAFEMA), Anwar emphasized the need to balance technological progress—such as AI, animation, and IT—with the preservation of national culture, language, and identity. He noted that while the industry must evolve with the times, it should not lose its cultural roots.
During the discussions, GAFEMA representatives raised several concerns, including intellectual property rights for works produced with public funds, the provision of affordable housing for artists, and the need for increased funding for industry development and training. Anwar stated that the government would review these suggestions to strengthen support for the national film industry, which he described as a vital medium for shaping national identity and soul.
