Anwar Ibrahim defends Najib Razak pardon deferment as legal process

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the decision to defer former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s pardon petition was guided by the rule of law, the Constitution, and national governance principles, rather than personal prejudice or hatred.

Speaking during a press conference in India, Anwar emphasized that his role within the Pardons Board is subject to legal frameworks and official guidance from the Attorney General. He noted that while political considerations and views from UMNO leadership are factors, he is committed to following the legal path regardless of whether it is the easy or difficult route.

Anwar also acknowledged that the final decision rests within the discretion and authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, who must consider all relevant factors during Pardons Board meetings. The deferment follows a recent decision by the King to postpone the consideration of the petition to a future meeting.
