Anwar Ibrahim draws criticism over comments on Taiwan sovereignty

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has drawn sharp criticism following comments in an interview with Al Jazeera regarding Taiwan's status. During the interview, Anwar compared the potential use of force to maintain national unity in China to Malaysia's own historical context, suggesting that force might be used to prevent a state from seceding to protect national dignity.

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation, labeling the remarks as “absurd” and an attempt to justify the use of force by the People's Republic of China. The Ministry emphasized that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation and warned that such statements could damage political trust and investor confidence between the two regions.

Luke de Pulford, co-founder of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), also criticized the Prime Minister, stating that the comments were “factually incorrect” and demonstrated a lack of historical understanding. De Pulford noted the distinction between the ‘One China Principle’ and the ‘One China Policy’ maintained by various nations, arguing that Anwar's stance ignores the reality of Taiwan's distinct political identity.
