Anwar Ibrahim calls for national unity and an end to racial politics

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has issued a call for national unity, urging political parties to cease exploiting racial issues to gain support. Speaking at the 41st Malaysia Chinese Cultural Festival in Melaka, Anwar stated that while racial concerns were understandable during the nation's early years of independence, the current political climate—where parties resort to racial rhetoric when desperate—is detrimental to the country's social and political stability.

Anwar emphasized that Malaysia belongs to all its citizens, regardless of race or religion, and warned that the nation is at a critical juncture. He stressed that diversity should be a collective strength rather than a tool for division, noting that the country must ensure all communities feel they belong.

In separate reflections, the Prime Minister also honored the pioneers of the Reformasi movement. Recalling his own history, including his time in Sungai Buloh Prison, Anwar expressed gratitude to those who fought alongside him and his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, for the agenda of change. He encouraged supporters to maintain the spirit of reform for future generations, stating, ‘Lawan tetap lawan’ (The fight goes on).
