Anwar Ibrahim welcomes Western measures against Israeli settlements

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed a joint declaration by 12 Western nations regarding measures against illegal Israeli settlements. The statement, issued by foreign ministers on September 8, 2026, includes commitments from countries such as Britain, Canada, and France to introduce measures aimed at banning trade in goods originating from these settlements.

Anwar highlighted remarks from British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, noting that the United Kingdom has formally recognized the unlawfulness of the Israeli occupation in its entirety. He also referenced acknowledgments regarding the occurrence of ethnic cleansing in parts of the West Bank by individuals described as ‘settler terrorists.’

While welcoming these developments as an overdue shift in approach, Anwar urged the international community to move beyond political statements toward concrete implementation. He called on these governments to utilize their diplomatic and economic leverage to end settlement expansion, prevent forced displacement, ensure accountability for destruction in Gaza, and guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access.
