ANWB Deploys Extra Road Patrols and 6,000 Rental Cars for Summer Holiday Traffic in Europe

The Dutch holiday season began on 4 July, prompting the ANWB to brace for increased traffic on major routes such as the A2 south of Utrecht. While Dutch roads are expected to remain relatively calm, the neighbouring regions of Germany and France face their own holiday peaks and extensive summer road works – more than 1 200 sites in Germany alone – which could cause lane restrictions and delays.

To mitigate the impact, the ANWB has positioned roughly 30 road‑watch teams across the most frequented routes in Italy, Spain and other southern destinations, providing Dutch‑speaking assistance to stranded motorists. A fleet of about 6 000 rental cars is also on standby to replace vehicles that break down and cannot be repaired locally. The organisation advises travellers to prepare for heat, carry water and an umbrella, and to view congestion as a normal part of the holiday travel experience.
