Anya Leslie receives inaugural Dr Ian Napier marine biology studentship

Anya Leslie, a marine biology student from Lerwick studying at the University of Glasgow, has become the first recipient of the Dr Ian Napier Studentship. The program was established in memory of the late Dr Ian Napier to foster collaboration between the fishing industry and fisheries science.

Created through a partnership between the Shetland Fishermen’s Association and UHI Shetland, the fully funded studentship provided Leslie with an eight-week practical placement at UHI Shetland’s Scalloway campus. During her time, she engaged in various research and industry activities, including fish sampling at the Lerwick Fish Market, measuring and ageing scallops, assisting with scientific literature reviews, and participating in an inshore fish survey.

Leslie also participated in a dolphin survey with marine mammal scientists and assisted in efforts to restore seagrass meadows in Shetland. The studentship provides undergraduate students with a stipend, accommodation, and specialized training for working on research vessels.
