Anyang City Council chairperson suspended by court order

The Suwon District Court has issued a decision to suspend the execution of the Anyang City Council chairperson's election, resulting in the immediate suspension of duties for Eum Gyeong-taek of the People Power Party.

The court ruled that maintaining the validity of the election could cause irreparable harm to the applicants and that there is an urgent need to prevent such damage. Consequently, the Vice Chairperson will act as the proxy for the chairperson's duties in accordance with the Local Autonomy Act.

The dispute stems from a July 21 election during the 312th extraordinary session, where a vote for Democratic Party member Yoon Kyung-sook was invalidated due to a dispute over the notation of Chinese characters and Hangul on the ballot. The Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit to confirm the invalidity of the election and is calling for a verification of the sealed ballots.
