Anykščiai social care homes face utility outages after storm
Following a severe storm in Lithuania, several branches of the Anykščiai Social Care Home have been without electricity, water, and communication services for more than three days. The Svėdasai and Troškūnai branches, which house over 50 residents, are facing particularly difficult conditions. While the facility is using generators to power essential items like lighting and kettles, the lack of running water and sewage services poses significant challenges for hygiene and care.
Anykščiai District Mayor Kęstutis Tubis has criticized the electricity distribution operator, ESO, for failing to prioritize critical institutions. He noted that while hospitals are a first-category priority, the social care homes have not seen service restoration as expected. Tubis also reported a lack of cooperation and communication from ESO regarding the progress of repair crews.
Currently, water supply remains unavailable in 17 settlements within the Anykščiai district. The social care home director, Jolita Gečienė, stated that ESO has indicated a plan to restore electricity by August 28, though she emphasized the urgent need for priority service for care facilities. The municipality and local water services are providing ongoing assistance to manage the crisis.
