AOC urges Senator Mitch McConnell to disclose health status or resign

Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez said Senator Mitch McConnell’s five‑week absence from the Senate is “not normal” and called for a clear health update or his resignation. She referenced a July 8 letter from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear requesting information, noting that McConnell’s team had offered only minimal updates since his hospitalization in June. McConnell, 84, released a July 12 letter saying he was recovering in a rehabilitation facility and hoped to return to the Senate floor.

Ocasio‑Cortez told reporters, “If he can’t give us an update, he should resign, absolutely,” adding that elected officials cannot disappear from work without explanation. The remarks sparked criticism on social media, with some accusing her of hypocrisy by comparing McConnell’s silence to perceived absences of Democratic officials. Senator Josh Hawley also urged McConnell to keep constituents informed. The debate over transparency and accountability continues as McConnell’s return remains uncertain.
