Aoife Battersby speaks publicly after cousin sentenced for childhood sexual abuse in Ireland

Aoife Battersby, a 26‑year‑old Irish woman, has spoken publicly for the first time about the sexual abuse she endured as a child at the hands of her cousin, Darren Battersby. Darren, 34, was convicted at the Central Criminal Courts of four counts of sexual assault and one count of oral rape that occurred between 2005 and 2008, when Aoife was aged five to eight and Darren was 14‑16. He received a three‑year prison sentence.

Aoife, who waived her anonymity, said she hopes her story will encourage other victims to seek help. She described the lasting impact of the abuse, which followed the death of her mother when she was three, and the complex family dynamics that made speaking out difficult. The case highlights the personal trauma of childhood sexual abuse and the legal consequences for the offender.
