Aomori Prefectural Assembly elections approach with new redistricting
The Aomori Prefectural Assembly election, scheduled for April, is approaching with significant changes to the electoral structure. For the first time, the election will be conducted under a new system of redistricting and seat allocation. The total number of seats will be reduced by two, from the current number to 46, and the number of electoral districts will decrease from 16 to 13.
These changes aim to resolve long-standing issues such as non-contiguous districts and the elimination of single-member districts, except for the Kuroishi district. The political landscape remains fluid as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) works to ensure the election of all its endorsed candidates, while opposition parties are actively recruiting new candidates to challenge the LDP's dominance.
Several incumbents have indicated intentions to retire or run for different offices, including Tatsuya Terada and Shuichi Takahashi from the LDP, and Sadao Tanabe from the Constitutional Democratic Party. In the Tsugaru region, multiple new candidates are already expressing intent to run in districts such as Hirosaki, Kuroishi, Tsugaru, and Hirakawa.
