AOPA proposes governance reforms amid leadership disputes
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is facing internal pressure and proposing significant governance reforms. Following the dismissal of CEO and President Darren Pleasance by the Board of Trustees, members have initiated a petition expressing dissatisfaction with leadership. Critics of the board suggest a disconnect between the trustees, who are largely jet and turboprop owners, and the piston engine pilot community, particularly regarding issues like the transition to unleaded fuel.
In response to organizational shifts, AOPA has proposed major changes to its governing bylaws, which include a new process for nominating trustees, the introduction of term limits, and the implementation of electronic voting. The proposed reforms would require trustee candidates to submit formal nominations and letters of recommendation for review by a nominating committee. Additionally, the proposal introduces staggered three-year terms to ensure board continuity, with service generally limited to 12 consecutive years.
