Aorta Sem Fronteiras congress addresses high aortic disease mortality

The first multidisciplinary congress on aortic diseases, ‘Aorta Sem Fronteiras’, has been established to address high mortality rates associated with aortic pathologies. The event brings together vascular and endovascular surgeons to discuss advancements in diagnosis and treatment.

Data from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS) indicates that between 2016 and 2021, there were 43,767 deaths due to aortic aneurysm and dissection in Brazil, averaging nearly 20 deaths per day. Mortality rates exceed 80% in cases of rupture. Experts note that these diseases are often silent and difficult to diagnose; the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) reports that more than half of patients suffering a rupture die before reaching a hospital.

Organizers Fábio Augusto Cypreste, Fábio Lemos Campedelli, and Carlos Eduardo Amorelli emphasize that early diagnosis remains the primary challenge. Risk factors include smoking, hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Statistics show that over half of the recorded deaths occurred in patients aged 70 or older, and approximately 60% of victims were men.
