Aosta and Milan to establish direct train connection by 2027
The regions of Valle d’Aosta and Lombardy have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a direct train service between Aosta and Milan. The project aims to eliminate the need for passengers to change trains in Turin or Chivasso, making rail travel more competitive against private vehicles.
The service is expected to begin by June 2027, coinciding with the completion of the electrification of the Ivrea-Aosta line. Initial plans include four weekly pairs of trips distributed across Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This first phase is designed to primarily serve tourists, university students, and weekend travelers.
To manage the service, a joint technical committee will be established to coordinate schedules, rolling stock, and intermodal connectivity. Operating costs will be shared equally between the two regions, with Valle d’Aosta funding two pairs of trips and Lombardy funding the remaining two. The regions also intend to consult with the relevant Ministry regarding the potential inclusion of these connections within the Intercity network.
