Aosta Valley issues boil water advisory due to bacterial contamination

Authorities in the Aosta Valley region have issued a precautionary boil water advisory following the detection of bacterial contamination in several municipal reservoirs. On August 27, the Mayor of Aosta signed the ordinance after analyses revealed levels of Escherichia coli, intestinal enterococci, and coliforms exceeding safety limits in reservoirs including Montfleury, Pont d'Avisod, Tramail, Excenex, Arpuilles, Talapé, and Bornyon.

This incident follows similar contamination issues in the region. On August 21, Saint-Christophe was placed under a boil water mandate affecting eleven districts. Additionally, the municipality of Quart experienced a complete water shortage earlier in August, requiring emergency water tankers and temporary shower facilities.

Local concerns have been raised regarding the recurring nature of these outbreaks. Potential causes cited include heavy rainfall, snowmelt, and proximity to livestock pastures, which can lead to bacteriological contamination of the water sources and aging distribution networks.
