AOUP implements personalized 3D ankle prosthesis surgery
The University Hospital of Pisa (AOUP), specifically the Orthopedics Department for Foot and Ankle Surgery directed by Giuseppe Restuccia, has successfully implemented personalized 3D ankle prostheses. Using the advanced Prophecy system, the hospital utilizes preoperative CT scans to reconstruct a patient's unique ankle anatomy in three dimensions.
This technology allows for the creation of customized cutting guides tailored to the specific shape and structure of the patient. Through digital planning, surgeons can pre-determine critical parameters, including bone cut orientation and the alignment of prosthetic components. This approach offers a significant evolution over traditional treatments like arthrodesis, which eliminates pain by fusing the joint but results in a loss of mobility.
