US officials investigate suspicious mailings targeting Congress and election offices

Federal authorities, including the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, are investigating a wave of suspicious mailings containing an unknown white powder. The mailings have targeted more than three dozen members of Congress from both political parties, as well as at least 26 election offices across multiple states.

Notable recipients include Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representative Elissa Slotkin. In Colorado, at least five Democratic lawmakers, including Senator John Hickenlooper and Representative Joe Neguse, reported receiving the substance. While some preliminary tests indicated the powder was not hazardous, the investigations are ongoing to determine the identity of the sender and the nature of the substance.

Law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police and local departments, are working to secure offices. Officials have noted that more than 100 such letters may be circulating within the U.S. mail system, targeting both congressional offices and secretary of state offices ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
