APA Group shares reach 52-week highs following energy sector rally
APA Group shares have reached a 52-week high, climbing to $11.57 in recent trading. This movement follows a broader rally across the energy sector, where oil and gas exploration peers also posted significant gains.
One driver for the recent momentum is APA Group's agreement to acquire an 80% majority stake in the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant from CS Energy. The project, located near Chinchilla, Queensland, is expected to cost approximately $1,269 million. APA's portion of the investment is estimated at $1.015 billion, which will be funded through existing balance sheet capacity. The plant is a 400MW gas power station, and the investment is supported by a 25-year inflation-linked hedge offtake agreement with CS Energy, intended to limit exposure to wholesale electricity price volatility.
While the stock has seen a year-to-date increase of 28%, analyst sentiment remains divided. Some market data suggests concerns that the shares may have exceeded fair value, with some analysts maintaining hold or sell ratings despite the recent price surge.
