Aparecida de Goiânia to host free ‘1888’ Afro-Latin American theater spectacle

The municipality of Aparecida de Goiânia will host the spectacle ‘1888’ on October 22, 23, and 24. Part of the ‘Temporada 1888 – Dramaturgia Afro-Latinoamericana’, the free performances will take place across three cultural venues: the Instituto Justina, CENFI, and the Ponto de Cultura Rosa dos Ventos.

The production explores Afro-Brazilian and Latin American memories, addressing themes of slavery, violence against Black women, and ancestral knowledge. The narrative follows Justina, a Black healer living in 1888 Brazil, as she carries stories across generations. Developed by Takaiúna in partnership with Claudia Eid Asbún, the work utilizes ‘bridge elements’ to connect scenic references and cosmologies across Latin American territories.

In addition to the performances, the program includes a free writing workshop titled ‘Palavras Necessárias’, led by Claudia Eid, and the publication of the ‘1888’ text in book format for free distribution to schools, libraries, and cultural centers.
