Apartment fires in Indaiatuba and Curitiba raise safety concerns in Brazil

A fire broke out in a seventh‑floor apartment in the Jardim Brizola district of Indaiatuba around 00:45 on 5 August, reportedly after a cellphone was left charging beneath a pillow. Two women suffered light smoke‑inhalation injuries and were taken to a local emergency unit, while a fourth person was taken to Hospital Santa Ignês for evaluation. Two residents who rely on continuous oxygen support also required temporary assistance during the response.

In a separate incident on 6 August, a family dispute in a pension on São Francisco street in Curitiba turned violent when a son attacked his mother with a hammer and set a mattress ablaze. Police Military units evacuated all occupants, including elderly residents, before the fire brigade arrived. Firefighters used about 2,000 liters of water to control the blaze, and no injuries were reported. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
