APC defends Betta Edu's role in Tinubu's 2027 campaign council
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended the inclusion of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, in President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council. Edu has been appointed as the Director of Women Mobilisation.
This appointment has drawn scrutiny due to an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Edu was suspended in January 2024 following allegations regarding the transfer of ₦585 million in public funds to a private account. While she has denied any wrongdoing, the investigation remains unresolved.
APC campaign spokesperson Kemi Asekun-Shittu stated that Edu is entitled to participate in political activities because she has not been convicted of any offence. Asekun-Shittu argued that it would be unfair to prevent her from pursuing her political career while awaiting the outcome of the EFCC process. The party also noted that the campaign council list is still being finalized and that the APC maintains the discretion to remove any names to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
