Nigeria 2027: Tinubu gains endorsements amid subsidy debates
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, political endorsements and economic policy debates are intensifying. Approximately 600 Northern academics have endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election, citing his administration's response to structural challenges through reforms in the petroleum and foreign exchange sectors. The Oba of Lagos has also expressed support for a second term for Tinubu, stating there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock” for the next several years.
In contrast, the debate over fuel subsidies remains a central political fissure. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to restore the subsidy if elected, a move the Federal Government has rejected as “retrogressive” and “fiscally unsustainable.” The Presidency argues that reversing the subsidy removal would undermine petroleum sector reforms and discourage investment in domestic refineries. Meanwhile, SDP candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo has proposed an alternative energy plan aimed at maintaining petrol prices at 200 Naira.
Political shifts are also occurring within opposition ranks, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) facing the resignation of its National Assistant Secretary, Hassan Muhammadu. Additionally, the ADC has called on INEC to prevent conflicts of interest by barring academics who have publicly endorsed candidates from serving as election collation officers.
