Nigeria enters 2027 election cycle as INEC and APC announce key dates

Nigeria has entered the official electioneering period for the 2027 General Elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring the commencement of political campaigns on August 19, 2026. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan emphasized the commission's neutrality, stating that it has no interest in specific candidates or platforms and will act as an impartial umpire to ensure a transparent and inclusive process.

During a National Peace Accord signing, Amupitan urged political actors to engage in issue-based campaigns focusing on economic growth, security, and infrastructure rather than personal attacks or misinformation. The commission is preparing to deploy approximately 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across 176,000 polling units to manage the upcoming polls.

The 2027 election schedule sets the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2027.

Simultaneously, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced its own internal schedule, setting August 22, 2026, for primary elections. These primaries aim to select candidates for legislative bye-elections and for four State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states that were recently restored following court judgments.
