Nigeria APC youth leader faces backlash over luxury SUV distribution

Dayo Israel, the National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has sparked widespread public outrage after sharing a video of seven brand-new 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs being presented to selected party youth leaders. Israel stated the vehicles were intended to support election mobilization activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. In his post, which was deleted hours after publication, he expressed gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her support of the party structure.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and other critics have estimated the cost of the seven vehicles to be over ₦1 billion, noting that an individual vehicle is valued at approximately ₦145 million. Critics, including Professor Pat Utomi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have condemned the expenditure as excessive and insensitive given Nigeria’s current economic hardships, rising living costs, and food insecurity.

Atiku Abubakar has called on the Presidency to provide transparency regarding the funding source, questioning whether the vehicles were purchased with private donations or public resources. Similarly, Utomi noted the stark contrast between the luxury gifts and the low salaries paid to Nigerian soldiers and the lack of funding for essential services like healthcare.
