APEC transport ministers target supply chain resilience

Transport ministers from Asia-Pacific economies convened in Beijing for the 12th APEC Transportation Ministers’ Meeting to address supply chain pressures and regional infrastructure needs. The summit focused on enhancing resilience against logistics disruptions, which research indicates can drive shipping costs up by as much as 300 percent due to single chokepoint failures.

While connectivity in the region has grown between 2015 and 2025—with rail networks increasing by 9 percent, maritime routes by 12 percent, and airport connections by 3.8 percent—ministers warned that trade uncertainty and tightened shipping capacity pose ongoing challenges. To mitigate these risks, officials called for improved transportation infrastructure through increased financing, public-private partnerships, and the diversification of maritime and air routes.

The meeting also emphasized the role of digital innovation and new technologies. Discussions highlighted the implementation of intelligent traffic signals, autonomous electric public transport, and predictive maintenance systems to reduce congestion, lower fuel costs, and improve emergency response times.
