Şaphane cherry growers call for government‑backed price floor amid daily price swings
In the Şaphane district of Kütahya Province, Turkey, cherry (vişne) producers are demanding that the government establish a minimum price to protect them from daily fluctuations in wholesale rates. Şaphane Agricultural Chamber President Talı̇m Bilaloğlu said that the lack of price stability is harming farmers, noting that a producer may plan to sell at 50 lira per kilogram in the morning, only to be told in the afternoon that the price has fallen to 40 lira, leaving him unable to object.
Bilaloğlu highlighted that current wholesale prices have already slipped below 50 lira per kilogram, a level he considers unsustainable. He pointed out that Turkey sets base prices for tea, hazelnuts and wheat, and urged that a similar mechanism be applied to cherries, with participation from the Agricultural Credit Cooperative and other sector representatives to calculate costs and set a floor price.
According to Turkish statistical data cited by Bilaloğlu, Şaphane annually produces about 8,500 tonnes of cherries, a figure expected to approach 9,000 tonnes as new orchards are established. Growers also stressed rising labor, fertilizer, pesticide and maintenance costs, which further erode profitability under the volatile pricing system.
