APHI and GAPKI urge companies to strengthen forest fire prevention

The Indonesian Forestry Entrepreneurs Association (APHI) and the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) are urging member companies to increase preparedness against forest and land fires (karhutla). This call for action comes amid concerns regarding the potential impact of El Nino and the onset of the dry season.

APHI Chairman Soewarso emphasized that prevention must be a priority for all companies holding Forest Utilization Business Licenses (PBPH). Companies are advised to ensure the readiness of personnel, infrastructure, early detection systems, and routine patrols. He also stressed the importance of immediate responses to any detected hotspots.

Furthermore, the associations recommend strengthening coordination with local governments, law enforcement, and disaster management agencies like BPBD and Manggala Agni. Because fires do not respect administrative or concession boundaries, collaboration between neighboring companies is essential. APHI also highlighted the need to involve local communities through education on fire-free land clearing and the empowerment of fire-aware villages.
