Aphrodite Patoulidou blends opera with metal in groundbreaking crossover

Greek soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou, born in Thessaloniki in 1977, trained at the University of Macedonia, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and Berlin University of the Arts. She has built an acclaimed operatic career praised by publications such as The New York Times and The Guardian. From 2019 to 2023 she toured with conductor‑soprano Barbara Hannigan, performing demanding roles such as Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s *La carrera de un libertino* and appearing as a soloist in Claude Vivier’s *Lonely Child* with leading orchestras worldwide.

Patoulidou is also noted for crossing into avant‑garde metal, lending her voice to French project Igorrr on the 2020 album *Spirituality and Distortion* and incorporating instruments like piano, guitar and the Swedish nyckelharpa into her compositions. She collaborates with choreographer‑director Sasha Waltz, notably in a production of Henry Purcell’s *Dido & Aeneas* at the Berlin State Opera slated for November. An Italian engagement is scheduled for 23 April 2027 at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, where she will perform in Jean‑Philippe Rameau’s *Hippolyte et Aricie*.
