Brazil reports surge in domestic violence and prevention efforts

Brazil is experiencing a surge in reported domestic violence incidents and corresponding public safety responses. Multiple cases of physical assault, threats, and arson involving partners have led to various arrests across several states, including Goiás, Paraná, and Alagoas. In some instances, aggressors resisted police intervention with weapons, necessitating the use of non-lethal force.

In response to these trends, several regional initiatives are underway. In Mauá, over 60,000 people have participated in prevention programs focused on identifying abusive behaviors. The Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Norte has launched a campaign specifically targeting men to take responsibility for combating violence. Additionally, municipalities in Mato Grosso are integrating violence prevention into school curricula.

On the law enforcement side, the São Paulo Police Ombudsman has called for a review of approach protocols following several deaths during police interventions. Meanwhile, crime statistics in Rio de Janeiro show a decrease in violent lethality and street robberies, though vehicle thefts have seen an increase.
