APM Terminals begins operations at electrified Suape terminal

APM Terminals has commenced commercial operations at its new terminal in the Suape Port Complex in Pernambuco, Brazil. Representing an investment of over R$ 2 billion, the facility is recognized as the first fully electrified container terminal in Latin America.

The terminal has an initial annual capacity of up to 400,000 TEUs, which is expected to increase the overall container handling capacity of the Suape complex by 55%. The first commercial vessel to call at the facility was the Maersk Ganges, which is part of a coastal service that connects Suape with several other Brazilian ports, including Pecém, Salvador, Santos, Itapoá, Rio Grande, and Imbituba. The vessel is scheduled to make two calls per week.

Economic studies suggest the project has the potential to add R$ 4.9 billion to the GDP, generate over 43,000 direct and indirect jobs, and contribute up to R$ 4.8 billion to exports.
