Apokoronas Municipality provides housing for teacher living in tent
A newly appointed teacher in the Apokoronas region of Crete was forced to live in a tent with her four-year-old daughter after failing to find affordable housing. The teacher, a music and drama specialist assigned to the Kalives Primary School, reported that most local accommodations were occupied by tourists, with many owners only offering availability from November onwards.
Following public attention to the situation, Charalambos Kikianakis, the Mayor of Apokoronas, intervened by offering the teacher temporary housing at the Vamos Girl's School, a municipal building. The teacher has accepted the proposal.
The incident has highlighted a broader housing crisis in Cretan tourist destinations, where rising rents and limited availability make it difficult for public sector workers, including educators, to secure basic living conditions. The Municipality of Apokoronas is currently considering further solutions, including the use of municipal properties and partnerships with private entities, to address the needs of workers and families in the area.
