Apokoronas Mayor urges Prime Minister to withdraw Crete wind farm project

Charalampos Koukiánakis, the Mayor of Apokoronas, has issued an open letter to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis requesting the withdrawal of a proposed 52.8 MW wind farm project in Asi Gonia, Crete.

The Mayor expressed unanimous opposition from the Municipal Council, citing concerns over the protection of the White Mountains, the Azilakas forest, and the Lake Kournas area. He argued that the project threatens the unique natural landscape, the historical identity of the region, and the quality of life for local residents.

Koukiánakis urged the Prime Minister to personally visit the area to witness the environmental stakes and called for the state to uphold its environmental commitments. The Mayor also noted existing pressures on the region's infrastructure, including the planned Chania-Damasta high-voltage line.
