Apoorv Kamble wins FIDE-rated rapid chess tournament in Bengaluru
Apoorv Kamble, a 17-year-old player, won the FIDE-rated rapid chess tournament held at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru on August 26. Kamble secured the title by scoring 8.5 points out of nine rounds in a Swiss format competition.
The event, titled ‘Road to GCL’, was organized by the Global Chess League in collaboration with Circle Chess and Golden Aura Trust. It served as a grassroots initiative to build momentum for the upcoming Season 4 of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. More than 700 players participated across various age groups and rating categories, competing for a total cash prize pool of ₹4 lakh.
Sammed Jaykumar Shete finished in second place, while Vaidyanathan Kannan took third. The tournament featured a time control of 10 minutes plus a five-second increment. Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, noted that the event aimed to connect the professional league with the local chess community and celebrate the talent within Bengaluru.
